The 20th Edition of the Karachi United School Championship: Senior Girls, Junior Boys, and Junior Girls

Alongside the Senior Boys category, which was in its 20th year, the other categories were in the following years –
Senior Girls – 11th year
Junior Boys – 6th year
Junior Girls – 2nd year

Senior Girls

Groups

The groups for the senior girl’s category were as follows –
Group A – Karachi Grammar School, The Lyceum, Highbrow College, Bahria College Karsaz, Alpha School, Happy Palace Grammar School
Group B – SMB Fatima Jinnah, Nixor College, Bahria Foundation College, The Learning House, SMS Aga Khan – Morning, The Social Bond
Group C – Generation’s School, Alpha College, SMS Aga Khan – Evening, Wahaj Hussain Schooling System, Bahria College NORE, Credo College
Group D – Aga Khan HSS Kharadar, Sceptre College, Foundation Public School, Cedar College DHA, St. Patrick’s High School, Aga Khan HSS Karimabad

Group Stages

The group stage matches were held at the Karach United Stadium. The teams were divided into 4 groups of 6 teams, with the top 2 from each group moving forward into the quarter finals.

Group A

Two-time defending champions KGS went rampant scoring 26 and conceding none as they won all their matches. Highbrow offered the most resistance to KGS, keeping the score line at 0-1. With this, KGS topped the group and Highbrow qualified as the 2nd best team.

Group B

SMB Fatima Jinnah were another high-flying side, scoring 25 goals and conceding twice, as they eased to the top spot. The battle for 2nd place was neck-to-neck between Nixor College and The Learning House. With both teams tied at 10 points, it all came down to goal difference with Nixor having a superior GD of +15 as compared to The Learning House’s +8.

Group C

Generation’s School were the only team who topped the group but did not win all their matches. Winning 4 and drawing once, they ended up on 13 points. WHSS and Alpha College battled it out for 2nd place. WHSS won 3 and lost 2 whereas Alpha won 2 and drew 3 matches leaving them both on 9 points each. However, Alpha had a better GD of +5 of that to WHSS +2.

Group D

Cedar College DHA was another high-flying side, scoring 21 and conceding once, as they topped their group. The 2nd place position was a battle between both campuses of Aga Khan HSS, Kharadar and Karimabad. With both campuses facing off in a winner takes it all match, the Karimabad campus came out on top with a 2-0 victory as they qualified for the KOs.

Knockouts

Quarterfinals

With the KOs sorted, the bracket was as such with A1 facing off C2 and B1 against D2 and so on so forth. The KO matches were held at Karachi United Stadium. The quarter final matches were as follows –

Karachi Grammar School 3 – 0 Alpha College
SMB Fatima Jinnah 4 – 1 Aga Khan HSS Karimabad
Generation’s School 0 – 1 Highbrow College
Cedar College DHA 0(0) – 0(1) Nixor College

KGS overpowered Alpha College in a 3-0 victory whilst maintaining a clean sheet. SMB Fatima Jinnah cruised past Aga Khan HSS Karimabad in a 4-1 victory and setting up a semi-final clash against favorites KGS. Highbrow College edged out Generation’s School in a narrow 1-0 victory and Nixor went all the way to pens to edge out Cedar College DHA.

Semifinals

The semi-finals were poised evenly as both high-flying schools met each other and the schools focused on defensive prowess faced off.

Karachi Grammar School 3 – 1 SMB Fatima Jinnah
Highbrow College 1 – 0 Nixor College

The final before the final, KGS and SMB Fatima Jinnah were expected to lock horns in this match. After KGS raced into an early 2-0 lead, SMB pulled one back as the score was 2-1 at HT. A goal in the 2nd half from KGS condemned SMB to the 3rd place playoff as they themselves secured a berth in the final.
Highbrow and Nixor both had their defensive displays on show as they both created chances, but the danger was snuffed out on both ends. As the match went into extra-time and penalties looming, Highbrow found themselves at the right place at the right time to slot home from close range as they set up a rematch of the group stage match vs KGS in the final.

3rd Place Playoff

SMB Fatima Jinnah 2 – 0 Nixor College

A repeat of the group stage match, the result was also the same as Harmain Shoukat (SMB FW) broke through the ranks and powered SMB Fatima Jinnah to bronze as Nixor were left ruing their missed chances.

Final

Karachi Grammar School 2 – 0 Highbrow College

Highbrow were boosted by the return of their captain Wania Hassan for the final. Although, their defense survived many attacks from KGS, the deadlock was broken as they themselves failed to finish their chances. KGS added another late on in the match to secure their 5th title and 3rd title back-to-back.

Group A – The CAS School, SMS Aga Khan – Evening, Ghulaman-e-Abbas School, Cedar College PECHS
Group B – Happy Palace Grammar School, The Learning House, Alpha Core School, The Social Bond
Group C – Karachi Grammar School, Generation’s School, Wahaj Hussain Schooling System, The Cedar School (Clifton)
Group D – Kiran Foundation, SMS Aga Khan – Morning, Bahria College NORE 1, Worth Schooling System

Group Stages

The group stage matches were held at the Karach United Stadium. The teams were divided into 4 groups of 4 teams, with the top 2 from each group moving forward into the quarter finals.
In Group A, The CAS School and SMS Aga Khan – Evening won both their matches before drawing against each other. With both teams’ level on points, GF, GA, and GD, a tiebreaker was played with SMS coming out on top.
HPGS were the dominant side in Group B as they went on to win all 3 of their matches. The Learning House ended up in 2nd place after winning against Alpha Core.
KGS dominated Generation’s School as they topped their group (C) after both of them had won their opening 2 matches.
Group D offered a more balance of matches with Kiran Foundation ultimately coming out on top and SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – M finished 2nd.

Knockouts

Quarterfinals

With the KOs sorted, the bracket was as such with A1 facing off C2 and B1 against D2 and so on so forth. The KO matches were held at Karachi United Stadium. The quarter final matches were as follows –

Happy Palace Grammar School 1 – 0 SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Morning
Karachi Grammar School 2(3) – 2(2) The CAS School
Kiran Foundation 0(3) – 0(2) The Learning House

Except for HPGS, all 3 matches went to a penalty shoot-out. The blockbuster match of KGS vs The CAS School was the standout match as both were favorites from the start to go all the way and meet in the finals. However, this quarter final match was very back-and-forth and it went all the way to a shoot-out. KGS then triumphed as The CAS were knocked out at this stage.

Semifinals

SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Evening 0 – 1 Happy Palace Grammar School
Karachi Grammar School 1 – 3 Kiran Foundation

HPGS edged past the other SMS Aga Khan school with a 1-0 victory as the dark horses booked their spot in the finals. Kiran Foundation put in a strong performance against favorites KGS and condemned them to the 3rd place playoff.

3rd Place Playoff

SMS Aga Khan Karimabad 0 – 2 Karachi Grammar School

In the battle for bronze, KGS came out on top as they managed to overpower SMS Aga Khan to clinch 3rd place.

Final

Happy Palace Grammar School 4 – 0 Kiran Foundation

In what was expected to be a closely contested final, HPGS ran riot in the match. The final was very one-sided as HPGS showcased a dominating display on their way to their maiden title.

Junior Girls

Groups

The groups for the junior girl’s category were as follows –
Group A – Karachi Grammar School, SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Evening, Happy Palace Grammar School
Group B – SMB Fatima Jinnah, Generation’s School, SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Morning

Group Stages

The group stage matches were held at the Karach United Stadium. The teams were divided into 2 groups of 3 teams, each playing against the other twice, with the top 2 from each group moving forward into the semi-finals.
SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Evening topped their group with 4 wins out of 4. KGS scraped through to 2nd place after overcoming HPGS in the group stages.
SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Morning topped their group and Generation’s battled their way to 2nd place.

Knockouts

With the KOs sorted, the bracket was as such with A1 facing off B2 and B1 against A2. The KO matches were held at Karachi United Stadium. The semi-final matches were as follows –

Semifinals

SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Evening 1(1) – 1(2) Generation’s School
SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Morning 0 – 1 Karachi Grammar School

Underdogs Generation’s School pulled of an upset after triumphing SMS Aga Khan on penalties. KGS on the other hand struggled against SMS Aga Khan but still managed to pull off a 1-0 win.

3rd Place Playoff

SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Evening 1(3) – 1(2) SMS Aga Khan Karimabad – Morning

With both Aga Khan schools battling it out for 3rd place, the match went down to penalties before Karina stepped up for the Evening campus to slot home and save the penalty to help her team win bronze.

Final

Generation’s School 2 – 4 Karachi Grammar School

KGS started the match by opening the scoring. However, Generation’s equalized before KGS scored again to take the lead. Generation’s equalized once again to take the game to extra time. With fatigue a factor as well, KGS struck twice to retain the title.
